Prêt-à-Porter 2009: Some top brands to keep you stylie this summer

So I wanted to follow up my 5ones post on Summer Lovin' (aka what to do when the snow melts) with some of my favorite new gear for this summer.

Ando and Friends
One of the hippest little brands is Ando and Friends. They make men's, women's and kids' clothes (and I'm hoping that they have some baby stuff on the way). Board shorts, t's and sweat shirts that will keep you feeling the flow from beach to breakfast. Ando and Friends is an art driven clothing collection from the artist, Andy Davis, the creator of brands “free” and “bird” and his friends. The stuff is super stylie and unique. It's hard for brands to pull off the "soul-surfer" image without seeming trite, but Ando and Friends nails it and just makes you wanna smile.

Quiksilver
Hyped more than Kelly Slater's 9 world championships is Quiksilver's new Diamond Dobby technology. Quiksilver says "think of it as... little diamond shaped pillows" and they advertise that it offers: No more rashes, Perfect Stretch, Ultra Lightweight and Quik Dry (2x as fast as the average boardshort). That's some tall talk from a brand that has been seen as much ink in the Finance pages as it has in Surfer or Surfing. Now I gotta say I was/am skeptical, but I took them for a dry-run (still too cold to go without a wetsuit here in New England), and they're pretty damn comfy and pretty damn light. I hate getting board rashes and am still running an old pair of Analog board shorts (water camo) because of it. I'll be taking them for a spin in some warmer climes and will report back, but now that most major board short companies are selling trunks for $50-$100, $59 doesn't seem outrageous for good board shorts, especially if they keep you from getting the clap.

Pro-tec
You may recognize Pro-tec as the helmet company of Scotty Arnold, Danny Kass or Andreas Wiig. They also make some great skate equipment. Recently, the VF/Vans-owned company has been making in-roads into the BMX and mountain bike scene. For the last three seasons, I've been running their Hi-5 glove for pretty much anything that involves two wheels from spring/fall road riding to XC trails with the dogs to downhilling at Highland. And my busted pair? It make an excellent pair of work gloves. They're pretty low frills, but I've learned over the years that a basic set of gloves with a dab of padding and a snot wiper on the thumb is all that you need for most mountain biking applications. A high five for the Hi-5! (you knew that was coming)

Oakley
In the category of everything you need and nothing you don't, you gotta check out Oakley's HiJinx sunglasses. They come in every possible style that you can think of, including custom and Oakley has released a limited-edition artist series (including Will Barra, Robert Pimple and Art Chantry) over the last few months. The latest is the Propaganda which ties into their new board short. Totally functional and repped by Bruce Irons and half the ASP. I opted for black on black with black polarized iridium lenses. Sickter.

Krochet Kids International
I know that you still rock your stinkie beanie in the summer while you skate. It's time to get a new beanie, and ditch that promo Burton one you got from spinning the Volvo wheel at the Open. At least get a new one for when you're in the presence of the ladies. Krochet Kids is a collaboration of love between a small group of indie peeps in the Pacific Northwest and the African nation of Uganda. The beanies are sewn in Uganda and proceeds go directly back to the manufacturers. The styles are super tight, and you're doing the right thing for people in need. You even get to see who made your beanie by looking at the inside tag. Take a roll through their site. It's truly inspirational. You'll see me rocking their logo on all my shizz.

Ok. It's time for me to go back to prepping for the impending arrival of the baby or kicking this nasty cold that I got last week.

Only a few days left for the Free Snowboard contest

Hey all. Just a quick heads up. Only a few more days to submit your entries for the Snowboard Virgins Free Snowboard contest sponsored by Sierra Snowboard and Mountain Dew. What's that again? My snow season is over, can I still enter?

It's the contest where you ask random people (friends, neighbors, family, strangers) to explain snowboard terms/slang to you like "stoked", "rad", "roast beef", "tindy", "reverse camber" and get it on film.

Film them at the grocery store, on the hill, hell, even in your backyard.

The quality can be cell phone to HD. And videos can be as short as 30 seconds as long as 2 hours (but I'm not watching all two hours).

You can get more details on the entry information here:

http://www.tinyurl.com/snowboardvirgins

The winner is going to get a free snowboard from Sierra (based on one of the past winners of the Dew Tour events) so think: Burton Feelgood ES, Uninc, Custom, etc. Fresh and brand new in the plastic, ready for your summer at Hood or next winter.

And there's whole mess of mtn dew schwag as well to be distributed randomly.

So get out there, film some people and submit your video via YouTube to: snowboardvirgins@gmail.com

The odds of you winning a snowboard are like 2 to 1 (or something along those lines).

Fun facts about Boloco for the Boston Peeps

Recently I was sent this by Boloco via Twitter. If you're not in Beantown or New England, Boloco is a burrito and smoothie chain that offers some good food, good deals and is very active on the tweeting.

As a reminder on Earth Day, they highlighted these key facts to their employees. They're one of the first companies I saw using corn-based cups and bamboo bowls to ease composting and recycling efforts. Pretty rad.

Fact 1: Boloco is the first chain in Boston to be recognized as certified Green by the Green restaurant Association.

Fact 2: Our recycling program that is in place right now has prevented 175 tons (yes TONS) from going in to the landfill... wait till the steps that follow take place!

Fact 3: The composting program that Israel and Sahara are leading are removing an added 13 tons a year each from the landfills

Fact 4: Our crews are outfitted in organic cotton shirts thereby saving the cotton producers from any exposure to pesticides. (Cotton fields use the most pesticide per acre of any crop and those pesticides had their origins in nerve agents developed in WW2.)

Fact 5: Our Corn cups and bamboo bowls are 100 % compostable and have eliminated the use of thousands of barrels of oil used in the production of plastic that we no longer use. Forks, knives and spoons to follow soon!

Fact 6: Our low flow water sprayers in our back sink is saving over $1000 a year in water costs per store and over 100,000 gallons of water

Bonus Fact: As a reminder, most of our meats have been naturally-raised for nearly 2 years, our famous tofu is organic, among so many other things.

Keep track of the Quiksilver Pro Durban WQS Surf Contest

Hey. Want an easy way to keep track of the Quiksilver Pro Durban?

Follow them on Twitter here. This is a perfect example of one of the many great uses of Twitter. Stay-up-to-date without having to do any work (hey I know you're lazy) on the latest and greatest 6-star event. I was even able to grab this pic of Owen White, giant killer (not the guy from You, Me and Dupree), from their tweets (Wilson took out Slater a little while ago).

Still kicking it old skewl? Here's their URL: http://www.quikprodurban.com/index.asp?page=Home

Quiksilver and Roxy 30% off plus Dynamite Surfing

Calling all peeps in Europe, calling all peeps in Europe! Just in time for summer: Quiksilver and Roxy are offering 30% off a bunch of stuff: in-store and online. Check the link for more details on stores from Paris to Budapest.

I also recently lectured to a group of MBA students on social networks, web 2.0 and the evolution of marketing (heavy stuff brah)... One example that I gave that I thought I'd like to share was Quiksilver Europe's "Original Thinking" campaign. Here's the video off of Youtube and some stats from Quik and creative agency, Saatchi and Saatchi:

•Viewed 35MM times worldwide
•Featured in TV show, Mythbusters
•Appears as a case study in Adam Morgan’s Eat The Big Fish 2

The “Original Thinking” campaign resulted in a long-term sales increase of 10-20% and a 25% increase in the number of stores selling Quiksilver in the primary target region (Europe).

Snowboard Virgins Free Snowboard Contest: Update

Just a quick update everyone! I've been receiving a few questions and wanted to answer them en masse.

When does the contest end? And who can I interview?
There's still a bunch of days left in the season to get some awesome footage (contest ends April 31), but you don't need to be on the slopes to do it. Ask your teacher, your parents, your friends, your neighbors. Heck, ask that random guy on the street! It doesn't matter. Your sister's kid just started talking? Interview the baby. Anyway my point is you're not restricted to the slopes for this one.

I don't have a camera or my camera sucks.
And you're worried about the camera quality? Don't. Cell phone, crackberry and other mobile camera device-thingees are totally acceptable and welcomed. We're not looking for Stephen Spielberg here. Ghetto and street keeps it real, yo! As always give me a shout with questions.

When will you start posting videos?
Will look to post the first round of vids Monday morning, so get those video links to me as soon as you can. And to top it off, here's a bit of Skier Gaper vid for inspiration. Nothing says Gaper like these doods to the Xtreme in the park.

Thanks to Sierra Snowboard and Mtn Dew for helping get this off the ground. Don't be shy, and yes you can post multiple entries.
